Understanding Floating Drum Oil Skimmers
Vens Hydroluft's floating drum skimmers are heavy-duty oil recovery systems engineered for deployment on large water bodies, settling ponds, lagoons, and industrial effluent treatment plants. Made in Canada with ISO 9001 certified quality, these skimmers use a rotating oleophilic drum to continuously collect oil from the water surface, even in rough conditions with waves and debris.
How Drum Skimmers Operate
A floating drum skimmer uses a large rotating cylinder (drum) with an oleophilic surface that attracts oil while repelling water. As the drum rotates at the water surface, oil adheres to the drum surface. Wiper blades or scrapers remove the oil into a collection trough, from where it flows to storage tanks. The entire assembly floats on pontoons that adjust automatically to changing water levels, ensuring optimal oil collection efficiency around the clock.
Where Floating Drum Skimmers Excel
These skimmers are particularly effective in steel mill scale pits, refinery API separators, effluent treatment lagoons, mine tailings ponds, and oil spill containment zones. Their large drum surface area provides high oil recovery rates even when oil layers are thin. For oil spill emergencies, pair drum skimmers with Vens Hydroluft's containment booms, portable oil storage tanks, and truck-mounted vacuum systems for a complete oil spill response solution.
Drum Skimmers vs Other Floating Skimmers
Compared to floating brush skimmers and floating funnel skimmers, drum skimmers offer higher oil recovery rates per pass and better performance with heavier oils. They handle debris and rough water conditions well due to their robust construction. For fixed-tank applications, consider our belt oil skimmers or multi-disc ORBIS Pro skimmers.
