Oil Skimmers for Oil Refineries and Petrochemical Plants: Process Water Treatment and Hydrocarbon Recovery

Oil refineries and petrochemical plants produce vast volumes of oil-contaminated process water that must be treated before discharge or reuse. From crude desalter water to tank drainage and cooling blowdown, oil skimmers are deployed throughout refinery water treatment systems to recover hydrocarbons, protect downstream treatment processes, and ensure compliance with stringent discharge permits. This guide covers the critical applications and equipment specifications for oil skimming in the refining and petrochemical industry.
Oil-Water Separation in Refinery Operations
Refinery wastewater typically passes through a multi-stage treatment train. Primary separation occurs in API separators or CPI (corrugated plate interceptor) units where gravity separates free oil from water. Oil skimmers on these separators continuously remove the concentrated oil layer from the surface. Secondary treatment uses dissolved air flotation (DAF) or induced air flotation (IAF) to remove dispersed oil. Tertiary treatment may include biological treatment, activated carbon, or membrane filtration. Oil skimmers serve as the critical link between gravity separation and downstream treatment — without effective surface oil removal, the entire treatment train underperforms.
Hazardous Area Requirements
Most oil skimmer locations in refineries are classified as hazardous areas (Zone 1 or Zone 2 under IEC classification, or Class I Division 1 or 2 under NEC). This requires all electrical components including motors, junction boxes, and control panels to carry appropriate ATEX, IECEx, or UL/CSA hazardous area certifications. Non-sparking materials must be used where mechanical contact could create ignition sources. Grounding and bonding of the skimmer and collection system is mandatory to prevent static discharge. Vens Hydroluft provides oil skimmers with full hazardous area certifications for refinery and petrochemical installations.
Key Refinery Applications
API separator oil removal: Floating oil skimmers or FLAUS units on API separators provide continuous, automated oil recovery that responds to variable oil loading. Tank farm drainage: Belt skimmers on tank farm drain collection sumps recover oil from tank bottom water and rainwater drainage. Cooling water treatment: Floating skimmers on cooling tower basins remove oil contamination that degrades heat transfer. Stormwater treatment: Oil skimmers on stormwater retention ponds prevent hydrocarbon discharge during rainfall events. Slop oil processing: Skimmers recover oil from slop oil tanks as part of the oil reclamation process.
