Steel mills, aluminium smelters, and metal processing facilities operate some of the most challenging environments for oil removal equipment. Extreme temperatures, heavy oil loads from rolling and forming operations, abrasive scale particles, and massive water volumes make oil skimming in metal processing a specialised discipline. This guide covers the specific oil removal challenges and solutions for the metals industry.
Oil Sources in Steel and Metal Processing
Hot rolling mills use large volumes of rolling oil to lubricate the contact between rolls and the steel strip, and this oil contaminates the rolling coolant water system. Cold rolling mills generate oil-water emulsions from rolling lubricants that must be managed. Continuous casting machines produce oily water from mould cooling and spray cooling systems. Pickling lines generate acid-oil mixtures from surface oxide removal. Heat treatment furnaces produce quench oil contamination in quench tanks. Hydraulic systems throughout the plant leak oil into floor drains and sump systems.
High-Temperature Skimmer Solutions
Hot rolling mill coolant water operates at 50–80°C, requiring oil skimmers with high-temperature construction. Stainless steel belt oil skimmers with heat-resistant seals and bearings handle these temperatures reliably. For scale pit applications where hot water and mill scale combine with rolling oil, heavy-duty floating oil skimmers with abrasion-resistant construction provide continuous oil recovery. Quench tank applications may reach 90–100°C during peak operation, demanding fully metallic skimmer construction with no polymer components in the wetted zone.
Scale and Debris Management
Mill scale — the iron oxide that forms on hot steel surfaces — is highly abrasive and settles in coolant tanks and sumps along with oil. Oil skimmers in steel mills must be designed to handle scale particles without premature wear. This requires hardened wiper blades, stainless steel belts rather than polymer belts, protected bearings and drive systems, and regular maintenance schedules accounting for accelerated wear rates.
